MASTER-PROGRAM IN DESSAU
The Dessau model follows the approach of the neighboring Bauhaus by integrating different design disciplines like Visual Communication (2D), Product Design (3D), and Time-Based Media (4D) in one study program.
The Master program in Intermedia Design allows you to specialize in one discipline, according to your previous focus or current interest, or to broaden your horizon towards the other disciplines. Your previous major is not of particular relevance, because our approach is focusing on conceptual and social topics, regardless of the implemented medium.
2D is focusing on any aspect of »Visual Communication«, ranging from corporate design to editorial design, to integrated campaigns—all focusing on social aspects of design.
The area of 3D covers any aspect of »Product Design«. The range covers technical and transportation design as well as interior or furniture design. But also experimental approaches, material research, critical design, and design thinking are part of the 3D curriculum.
4D integrates several aspects of »Timebased Media«. Films, Videos and Animations are developed in the audiovisual classes; Digital Publishing deals with websites or other forms of digital applications, and in the field of Interaction Design we develop interactive installations and physical computing.
STUDY IN DESSAU
In close proximity to the legendary BAUHAUS you will find an inspiring environment. Our modern campus with excellent workshop facilities provides a platform for your individual project work. In only 60 or 90 minutes you can reach the vibrant cities of Leipzig or Berlin, respectively.
Come to visit us for our Campusfest and day of the open doors, the “Dessau Design Schau”, to get a first impression of the program, campus, and neighborhood.
The three semester program offers two semesters of project work and one final thesis semester. Each semester an intermedial STUDIO project focuses on social design issues under a joint umbrella theme.
We offer individual coaching and mentoring, as well as expert knowledge in scientific research, teaching, and leadership. Joint classes with the International Master program foster intercultural exchange. Trial courses in different disciplines allow for experimentation and catching up lacking skills. Language of study is both, German and English.

“I Like the Focus on Social Design”

“It was great to get insights into the Bauhaus approach”
The international Master program in Dessau provided me the opportunity to broaden my skills. As a trained Architect I did not know much about Filmmaking or Typography. In the Expertise modules I was able to catch up those abilities. My favorite Elective Project was the »Pop-Up Hotel Oskar Schlummer«, which provided fascinating insights into the designs of the Bauhaus and Oskar Schlemmer in particular. In the future I would like to work more in the field of conceptual design, and the Master here in Dessau was the perfect preparation for this.
PASSAKORN, 3. Semester internationaler Master / MAID
“Perfect Combination of Theory and Practice”
NADINE, 3. Semester Master Intermediales Design
The STUDIO Project is dedicated to an annually changing umbrella theme that addresses a socially or ecologically relevant topic.
2013 the umbrella topic “Imploding Systems” concerned with the changing structures of our societies. In 2014 “Stop-Go” was focusing on mobility and deceleration in our everyday lives. This year’s umbrella topic “Glaube.Liebe.Hoffnung” discusses religious conflict potential, atheism, and superstition on the one hand—and the 500 years anniversary of Martin Luther’s Reformation on the other hand. The umbrella topic for 2016 was called RISIKO (RISK). 2017 was alternating between “Landscapes of Learning” and “Learning from Landscapes”.
2018 is the year of TYPES: We will research and develop Types, Archetypes, Prototypes, Typologies…
